    A recap of latest developments

We will be closing this live page shortly. It’s been another busy day in US election news, so here’s a recap of the latest developments:

    • Trump says he is leading the “greatest political movement” in the country’s history as he promises to tackle inflation and crack down on undocumented immigrants at a Nevada rally.
    • Harris pledges to support middle-class Americans in a star-studded event in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside former President Obama and rockstar Bruce Springsteen.
    • More than 30.1 million Americans have already cast their votes by mail-in ballot or early, in-person voting, according to the Election Lab at the University of Florida.
    • Harris is rallying in Houston, Texas, on Friday; Trump will be in Traverse City, Michigan.

Harris will not appear on Joe Rogan’s podcast, campaign says

The news follows earlier reports that such an appearance was being explored.

“We talked with Rogan and his team about the podcast. Unfortunately, it isn’t going to work out right now because of the scheduling of this … period of the campaign,” Harris campaign spokesman Ian Sams told MSNBC.

In recent weeks, members of both the Harris and Trump camps have appeared on a series of popular podcasts in an effort to reach potential voters who don’t rely on traditional media.

Rogan’s podcast is one of the most popular in the country.

Trump pushes plans to impose tariffs

Trump has touted his plans to use tariffs more aggressively during his second term, pitching them as a solution to a wide range of economic problems faced by the US.

While a growing number of Americans have grown sceptical of free trade policies that contribute to the hollowing out of US sectors such as manufacturing, economists warn that the cost of heightened import duties would largely fall on consumers.

“I can make anybody do anything through the use of tariffs,” Trump told the Nevada crowd, calling tariff the “third most beautiful” word in the dictionary, with “love” and “religion” in first and second, respectively.

“Tariffs needed a press agent, because a lot of crooked politicians, they didn’t like it. You know, they’re all taken care of by foreign countries. They don’t like tariffs,” he added.

    Trump praises Asian American community

As we reported earlier, Trump is seeking to woo Asian American voters – a growing demographic in Nevada politics – at his Las Vegas event.

“Under the Trump administration we’re going to build an economy that lifts up all Americans, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and also members of our great Asian American and Pacific Islander community, many of whom are here today,” he said.

“Especially so many amazing Nevada Filipinos,” Trump added.

“What spirit, what great spirit, it’s an honour to have you here. Beautiful clothing, the colours, I want to wear colours like that!” he said.

“How would it be if I walked into the Oval Office wearing some of those colours? I don’t know, for me I don’t think it works.”

Harris campaign shares video comparing size of rallies to Trump’s

The Democrat has been trying to get under Trump’s skin by comparing the size of her rallies to his.

Trump has repeatedly said his events draw more supporters.

A researcher at Harvard tracked the numbers in August: He examined 28 Trump campaign rallies and came to an average crowd size of about 5,600 people. The average crowd size across six Harris rallies was 13,400 attendees.

Trump attacks press attending rally, says they have a ‘death wish’

Trump has directed the ire of the crowd towards reporters covering the event.

The former president has long directed threats and anger towards journalists, whom he has previously called the “enemy of the people”.

“Look at that, oh, that’s a lot of fake news! Man, that is a lot of fake news! I don’t believe it!” Trump said in Las Vegas, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd.

“You know, they sort of have a death wish, because they don’t want to follow me, but they have to because of those ratings. Ultimately, it’s ratings first for them. Country, about fifth or sixth,” he added.

    Trump takes the stage

Trump has walked onto the stage to the song “God Bless the USA”, one of his favourites at campaign rallies. The crowd met him with chants of “USA! USA!”.

“I’d like to begin by asking a very simple question: Are you better off now than you were four years ago? I don’t think so,” he said, to shouts of “no!” from the audience.

“This is terrible what’s happening to our country. This is terrible. We have people that are grossly incompetent. We have the worst president in the history of the United States. We have the worst vice president in the history of the United States,” he added, in shots at Biden and Harris.

Open letter from pro-Palestine groups in Arizona says Trump must be defeated

A coalition of pro-Palestine, Arab, Muslim and progressive individuals and organisations in Arizona have released an open letter calling for Trump’s defeat in the election.

“As we consider the full situation carefully, however, we conclude that voting for Kamala Harris is the best option for the Palestinian cause and all of our communities,” the letter, which was shared on social media, reads.

“The first step – and our best choice in this horrible situation – is defeating Trump by electing Harris. We urge you to join us.”

Many Palestinian, Arab and Muslim Americans have said they will not vote for Harris because of her continued support for Israel as the top US ally wages war on the Gaza Strip and attacks Lebanon.

They have urged the Democrat to suspend American weapons sales to Israel – a call she has rejected.

Gabbard says ‘doing all’ she can to re-elect Trump

The former Democratic congresswoman says “our freedom and our future” is on the line.

Gabbard, who endorsed Trump in August and announced this week that she was joining his Republican Party, said if the former president is sent back to Washington, DC, he will “clean that house”.

“What he has built and what he is leading is a movement of love,” she said on the Las Vegas rally stage.

Observers have slammed Trump for his hostile and divisive rhetoric throughout the 2024 campaign, including repeated attacks against migrants, journalists, Democrats and perceived critics.

Trump to appeal to Asian American voters in speech

Trump will try to appeal to Asian American voters with his remarks in Las Vegas.

It’s part of a growing effort to bring Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities into the conservative fold.

“These are voters whose values closely align with the conservative platform, but have been given too little attention by our movement,” Charlie Kirk, the founder and president of Turning Point USA, a youth conservative group, said in a statement shared by US media outlets.

“Just as we’re seeing huge shifts with Hispanics and the Black community, this is a group that is poised to resonate powerfully with President Trump’s message of economic empowerment, law-and-order, safe streets, and a return to orderly, sane immigration policies,” Kirk said.

NBC News has noted that Asian Americans are the fastest-growing demographic in Nevada, where polls show Harris with a slight edge over Trump.

Election race rife with misinformation around immigration, survey finds

With immigration one of the most prevalent topics in the US election, the nonprofit group KFF Health Misinformation Tracking Poll has broken down just how prevalent misinformation is across the country.

In a survey released late last month, the organisation said a large majority of American adults – 80 percent – said they had heard false claims that immigrants are “causing an increase in violent crime”.

Another 74 percent said they had heard the false claim that immigrants were “taking jobs” and causing unemployment for people born in the US.

Among immigrant adults, 36 percent of respondents said the way Trump has spoken about immigrants during the 2024 campaign has had a negative effect on how they’re treated.

“More than twice as many immigrant adults say that immigrants will be better off under a Harris (55%) presidency than a Trump presidency (19%),” the survey also found.

Trump’s former critics, challengers sing his praises in Vegas

Vivek Ramaswamy, who challenged Trump for the Republican 2024 presidential nomination but dropped out of the race, has praised the former president at his Nevada rally.

“This is our last chance as a country,” Ramaswamy said of the upcoming election.

Senator Marco Rubio – whom Trump infamously derided as “Little Marco” during the 2016 GOP presidential nominating race – is also speaking to the crowd before Trump takes the stage.

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants to the US, praised Trump as the president “who gave us the most secure border in modern history”.

“When [Trump] was president, we had an economy where prices were stable, salaries were going up and people could afford to have a little bit of money left over at the end of the month,” he said.

Missouri to investigate claim Google censoring conservative speech

The US state’s Republican attorney general has said in a social media post that he’s launching the probe into Google “for censoring conservative speech during the most consequential election in our nation’s history”.

Andrew Bailey did not provide any specific examples of the alleged censorship.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Reuters news agency.

Republicans have long claimed an anti-conservative bias on social media platforms – an accusation tech firms have denied.

Trump said last month that he plans to seek the prosecution of Google if he wins the election. He and his supporters have claimed – without evidence – that Google searches display only “bad stories” about the former president.

Biden to apologise for Indigenous boarding school policy

The US president will formally apologise for the government’s role in forcing Indigenous children into boarding schools where many were physically and sexually abused – and nearly 1,000 died.

The apology, set to be delivered on Friday in the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, comes as Harris’s presidential campaign has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on ads targeting Native American voters in battleground states.

It will mark the first time a US president has apologised for the boarding school abuses and the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families and communities.

Who is Tulsi Gabbard, former Democrat joining Trump at Vegas rally?

Gabbard is a former Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from Hawaii.

A US military veteran who sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she announced in 2022 that she was leaving the party, which she described as an “elitist cabal of warmongers”.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoke anti-white racism,” Gabbard said at the time.

On Wednesday, she announced at a Trump rally in Georgia that she was joining the Republican Party – in large part due to the former president’s leadership.

Trump has worked “to transform the Republican Party and bring it back to the party of the people and the party of peace”, she said.
