US intelligence assessment says Hamas retains fighters, infrastructure
The US intelligence community says in its Annual Threat Assessment that Hamas’s popularity has declined in Gaza but remains high in the West Bank, “especially relative to the Palestinian Authority”.
“The group retains thousands of fighters and much of its underground infrastructure, and probably has used the ceasefire to reinforce and resupply its military and munitions stock so that it can fight again,” the report reads.
“Hamas is capable of resuming a low-level guerilla resistance and to remain the dominant political action in Gaza for the foreseeable future.”

‘On a journey’: Family mourns Hossam Shabat, journalist killed by Israel
Hossam Shabat, an Al Jazeera Mubasher journalist, was killed by Israel in a targeted strike on his vehicle on Monday.
Hossam’s colleagues spoke to Al Jazeera’s Arabic site about a larger-than-life character, full of love, and joy and always willing to help.
Early on in the war, Hossam had started to tell his family that he knew Israel would kill him, but that he felt it was his duty to keep doing what he was doing.

Trump’s pick for ambassador to Israel, in his own words
Opposition is growing to Mike Huckabee as the Senate starts the process of confirming him. A Christian Zionist, the former governor of Arkansas has a long history of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian statements. Here are some of the statements he has made over the years:
- “There’s really no such thing as a Palestinian.”
- “There are certain words I refuse to use. There is no such thing as a West Bank. It’s Judea and Samaria.”
- “I feel that we have a responsibility to respect that this is land that has historically belonged to the Jews.”
- Islam is a “religion that promotes the most murderous mayhem on the planet in their so-called ‘holiest days'”.

Saudi Arabia condemns Israel’s attack on Syria
The kingdom’s Foreign Ministry has expressed “strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli occupation forces’ bombing of the town of Koya in Syria”.
“The Kingdom reiterates its categorical rejection of the continued attempts of the Israeli occupation authorities to undermine the security and stability of Syria and the region through their blatant and repeated violations of relevant international laws,” it added.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry said six people had been killed in the attack on Koya, a town in the southern province of Deraa, adding that the toll was expected to rise due to serious injuries sustained from the attack.

US liberal Zionist group rejects Trump’s pick for Israel envoy
J Street, a group that describes itself as pro-Israel and pro-peace, has urged supporters to call on their senators to reject the nomination of Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel.
Huckabee has previously said that the Palestinian people do not exist and voiced support for the annexation of the West Bank.
“Now more than ever, we need a strong ambassador to Israel who will put mainstream American interests first, not press their own personal, unhinged views,” J Street said in a statement.
“A US Ambassador to Israel, especially at this moment, must firmly stand up for Israel’s security while also standing up for our shared values, hostage families, human rights and America’s strategic interests – and be ready to push back on Netanyahu’s government when necessary.”

A timeline of Israel’s weaponisation of aid to Gaza
Israel has repeatedly used food and international humanitarian aid as a tool of collective pressure against Palestinians over 17 months of its devastating war on the Gaza Strip.
Civilians in the enclave have been subjected to extreme food shortages and famine-like conditions throughout the war. Dozens of children have died of starvation, and countless others have succumbed to wounds or preventable illnesses during a deteriorating man-made humanitarian disaster.

The Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV reports that three more US air strikes have hit the Sahar district of Saada in northwest Yemen. Two attacks targeted the same area earlier.
The Trump administration has been stepping up its bombing campaign against the Houthis as the Yemeni group continues to launch missiles at Israel in an effort to pressure it to end the assault on Gaza.

Trump, UAE’s MbZ discuss Gaza ceasefire efforts
Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed has held a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, and discussed “developments in the Middle East region and efforts towards a ceasefire in Gaza”, the United Arab Emirates’s official news agency WAM says.
“The president stressed the importance of making the necessary humanitarian aid available for Gaza residents amid the difficult humanitarian situation in the territory,” WAM said.
It added that bin Zayed voiced support for the two-state solution as the way to achieve “comprehensive, just and lasting” peace in the region.
The UAE and Israel have been deepening security and economic ties since they established formal relations in 2020.

Moody’s keeps Israel’s negative fiscal outlook
The credit rating company has warned of Israel’s “very high political risks that have weakened economic and fiscal strength”.
A periodic review of Israel’s credit rating has left it at Baa1 so far, with a negative forecast, despite the approval of the budget at the Knesset earlier in the day.
“Uncertainty over Israel’s longer-term security and economic growth prospects are much higher than is typical, with risks to the high-tech sector particularly relevant, given its important role as a driver of economic growth and significant contributor to the government’s tax take,” Moody’s said in the update quoted by the Israeli media.
“We may stabilize the outlook if there are clear prospects for a durable cooling down of the military conflicts, in turn allowing Israel’s institutions to formulate policies that support the recovery of the economy and public finances and restore security while dealing with a wide range of policy priorities,” it added.

UN says 120,000 people displaced in Gaza since renewed Israeli violence
The UN humanitarian office, OCHA, says Israel has issued displacement orders covering about 15 percent of Gaza, leading 120,000 Palestinians to flee since March 18.
People in Gaza have been displaced repeatedly throughout the war as Israeli officials continue to threaten to annexe parts of the territory.
“Once again, OCHA stresses that civilians must be protected whether they move or stay. Civilians who leave for safer areas must be allowed to return as soon as circumstances allow,” the UN agency said in a statement.
“OCHA reiterates that civilians must be able to receive the humanitarian assistance they need, wherever they are. All of this is required by international humanitarian law.”

US Congress should not continue funding ‘horrific’ Gaza violence: Lawmaker
Democratic Congressman Jonathan Jackson says he is “horrified” by the renewed Israeli assault on Gaza.
“Nearly 700 people have died since he has broken the ceasefire, making it clear that he has no intention of stopping so long as he is provided with weapons of mass destruction,” Jackson wrote in a social media post.
“We must uphold a standard in congress and cannot keep tolerating and funding this horrific targeted violence.”

Syria welcomes condemnations of Israeli attack
The Syrian Foreign Ministry lauds UN Security Council members that denounced a deadly Israeli assault near Deraa, renewing calls for the international community to pressure Israel to end its attacks.
The Security Council had held a briefing on the Middle East earlier, during which some countries criticised Israel’s assault on Syria.
“Today, we witnessed a noticeable escalation in the aggression of Israeli forces that killed six innocent civilians,” Syria’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“We stress that the excuses that Israel has previously used for its repeated attacks on Syrian territory have been completely refuted, but Israel has continued its aggression without any deterrence.”
Israel has been bombing Syria for years, saying that it is targeting Iranian-backed forces. That campaign intensified after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, even as Iran lost its influence in Syria, and Tehran’s allied groups, including Hezbollah, withdrew from the country.
Israeli troops have also been advancing in Syria and expanding their occupation beyond the Golan Heights.

College student sought for deportation sues US government
US authorities are seeking to deport a university student who has resided in the country since she was seven years old, her lawsuit fighting the action says, as the US administration ramps up President Donald Trump’s campaign against students linked to pro-Palestinian protests.
Trump has targeted New York’s Columbia University, which the student attends, an epicentre of the US student protest movement sparked by Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The Trump administration has stripped federal funds and directed immigration officers to deport foreign student demonstrators.
Authorities are seeking to detain Yunseo Chung, 21, a South Korean citizen and permanent resident of the US, under the same powers they recently used to arrest and hold Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil pending deportation.
Chung, whom officers have been reportedly unable to find, sued the US government on Monday arguing that “immigration enforcement – here, immigration detention and threatened deportation – may not be used as a tool to punish noncitizen speakers who express political views disfavored by the current administration”.
The current whereabouts of Chung are unknown, according to reports.

The statement urged protests “in defence of our people in Gaza and Jerusalem, in support of our people’s steadfastness, and in rejection of the crimes of the occupation and its supporters”.
