I am a Holocaust survivor. UK police interviewed me for protesting genocide

    By Stephen Kapos

I was seven years old when Germany invaded and occupied their unreliable ally, Hungary, in March 1944. This makes me 87 years old now.

But my memories of hiding as a hunted Jew on false papers, and the utter devastation of the climactic fighting around us, between a trapped German army and the Red Army, are still a crystal clear memory. I see the burnt-out cars, tanks, dead horses and human bodies, ammunition and helmets thrown about, burnt-out buildings, mountains of rubble and broken glass everywhere – just like tragically destroyed Gaza is looking today.

For over a year now, it’s been clear that Israel’s plan is to destroy Palestinian society in Gaza in order to force as many people as possible to leave.

This policy has many differences from Nazi Germany’s plan to destroy Jewish society in Europe – but it also has many similarities. That is why, as a Holocaust survivor, I’ve felt compelled to join various pro-Palestine protests in London.

    Read more here.

    Fast facts: The Ibrahimi Mosque

We have been reporting that Israeli authorities are refusing Palestinians access to the Ibrahimi Mosque. Here are some fast facts about the holy site.

    • The mosque is revered by Jews and Muslims as the burial site of religious patriarchs. Jews revere the site as the Tomb of the Patriarchs, while Muslims call it the Ibrahimi Mosque, after the patriarch Abraham.
    • In 1994, an Israeli settler, Baruch Goldstein, machine-gunned 29 Palestinians to death and wounded more than 100 others as they prayed in the mosque.
    • Later that day, during and after the funeral processions of the victims, there were violent clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces, and more Palestinians were killed, according to the Institute for Palestine Studies.
    • After the 1994 massacre, Israel divided the mosque, allocating 63 percent for Jewish worship and 37 percent for Muslims. The prayer room for Jews is situated in the Muslim section.
    • A shrine to Goldstein was subsequently erected at Kiryat Arba – one of the most hardline settlements in Hebron and the West Bank.

Israel denies Palestinians access to Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron: Official

Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron have denied Palestinians full access to the city’s landmark Ibrahimi Mosque for a fourth consecutive Friday, the Palestinian minister of religious affairs has said, as reported by the Wafa news agency.

In 1994, 29 Palestinian worshippers were massacred by an Israeli settler and since then, Israeli authorities have divided the mosque between Muslim and Jewish worshippers.

What previous Israeli attacks have there been on WCK personnel?

We’ve been reporting that a World Central Kitchen (WCK) volunteer in Gaza has been killed after the Israeli army bombed an area near its aid facilities.

Here is some information about Israel’s previous attacks on the NGO:

    • In April 2024, a series of Israeli air attacks hit a convoy of the WCK, killing seven of its aid workers in central Gaza. Those killed were from Palestine, Australia, Poland and the United Kingdom, as well as a US-Canadian citizen.
    • Another staff member was killed in an Israeli attack in July 2024.
    • The Israeli military claimed that those attacks were “mistakes” and that it dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles.
    • However, an investigation by Al Jazeera’s Sanad verification agency using open-source information, witness testimonies, and images from the site found that the attacks were intentional.
    • In November 2024, the Israeli military killed three workers with the WCK and at least two other people in an air strike on a vehicle in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

US Senate committee to investigate American Muslims for Palestine nonprofit

A US Senate committee has launched an investigation into the group American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) and its activities on college campuses, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy has announced.

Speaking at a Senate hearing about campus anti-Semitism, Cassidy, the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, announced the probe into the nonprofit, accusing the group’s leaders of having “ties to Hamas” and of having helped create the group Students for Justice in Palestine, which has been active on US campuses.

Cassidy sent letters to the presidents of several US universities requesting information about AMP activities on their campuses.

AMP is a national education and grassroots-based organisation dedicated to educating the American public about Palestine and its rich cultural, historical and religious heritage, according to the group’s website. The group did not immediately address the report.

US Justice Department announces seizure of Hamas cryptocurrency

The US Justice Department has announced that it has disrupted a financing scheme through the seizure of approximately $200,000 in cryptocurrency held in wallets and accounts intended for Hamas, the department has announced.

In a statement, the Justice Department said that the seized funds were traced from fundraising addresses purportedly controlled by Hamas that were used to launder more than $1.5m in virtual currency since last October.

“These seizures show that this office will search high and low for every cent of money going to fund Hamas, wherever it is found, and in whatever form of currency,” US Attorney Edward R Martin Jr of the District of Columbia said in a statement.

According to court documents filed by the government, a group chat claiming association with Hamas on an encrypted communications platform provided Hamas supporters worldwide with a set of at least 17 cryptocurrency addresses, encouraging supporters to donate money to those addresses.

World Central Kitchen says Israeli strikes kill another of its personnell

The international food aid NGO reports via a statement on X that one of its volunteers in Gaza, named Jalal, was killed when the Israeli army bombed near one of its aid facilities.

It added that six others were wounded in the strike.

Last year, several World Central Kitchen employees were killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, marking the first time foreign aid workers were killed during Israel’s war.

Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of one of our volunteers in Gaza. Israeli strikes hit near one of our WCK-supported community kitchens just as meals were being distributed. Jalal was tragically killed and six other people were injured. We will continue to support…

Five people arrested in anti-government protests in Israel: Report

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that the arrests were made as Israeli protesters headed towards the Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv.

The newspaper said mounted police attempted to block the march, knocking some protesters to the ground.

Some demonstrators managed to make it onto Tel Aviv’s main highway, where police arrested two people, as well as another three protesters who were in the march.

Haaretz reported that Einav Zangauker, the mother of a captive, said that police on horseback whipped her daughter and other protesters around them.

Activists in Bristol protest trial of pro-Palestine group

Pro-Palestine activists in Bristol, UK, have staged a protest in support of 18 people currently facing trial over an earlier action against the Israeli defence company Elbit Systems.

Video verified by Al Jazeera’s fact-checking unit shows the protesters chanting slogans calling for the charges against them to be dropped.

The trial stems from a protest last August after which seven people were charged with criminal damage, violent disorder and aggravated burglary. Palestine Action, the group behind that protest, had rejected allegations of violence against police and security staff and said the authorities had launched a “smear campaign” to prejudice the outcome of the trial and “lay the groundwork for the police unjust use of authoritarian powers”.

“We refuse to be intimidated into allowing a genocide to happen,” the group said at the time.

On its website, Palestine Action describes itself as aimed at “dismantling British complicity with Israeli apartheid”.

UN special envoy calls for “stability and peace” in Yemen

The UN special envoy for Yemen has called for “peace and stability” in the country during a visit with European officials.

In an official statement posted on X following a visit to Brussels, where he briefed the European Union’s Political and Security Committee, the special envoy, Hans Grundberg wrote that “after ten years of conflict in Yemen, it has become clear that achieving stability and peace in Yemen is an urgent necessity, not only for the Yemeni people, but for the security and stability of the region”.

The comments came as the US recently launched a series of strikes in Yemen, while Yemen’s Houthis have repeatedly launched rocket attacks towards Israel in recent days.

“The resumption of a full-scale war in Yemen is not in the interest of any party and must be avoided,” Grundberg wrote. “It is imperative that the international community continue to take unified action to ensure a peaceful and sustainable solution for the Yemeni people.”

Sanders says he will force Senate votes to block arm sales to Israel

In a statement posted on X, the independent US senator from Vermont said that he will force votes on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval he introduced to block certain offensive sales to Israel.

“Netanyahu has clearly violated US and international law in this brutal war, and we must end our complicity in this carnage”, he said.

The US has remained Israel’s number one backer – both diplomatically and materially – throughout its nearly year and a half long war on Gaza.

Netanyahu's illegal war has killed 50,000 Palestinians. Now, Trump wants to force out 2 million more to build a billionaire's playground in Gaza.

That is ethnic cleansing — and it’s a war crime.

Iran responds to Trump’s letter calling for nuclear deal: Report

The Iranian government has sent a response to Trump’s letter urging it to reach a new nuclear deal, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

The agency cited Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, who said the response to the US was sent through Oman. In the letter, Iranian officials reiterated their stance on not negotiating directly while under pressure, but said they are open to indirect talks, Araqchi was reported as saying.

Trump has hinted at the desire to negotiate with Iran since returning to the White House earlier this year. But he has also reinstated a “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.
