US senators introduce legislation restoring UNRWA funding

US Senator Peter Welch, a Democrat of Vermont, has introduced legislation seeking to restore US funding to UNRWA.

“Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed. Food is scarce and disease is spreading,” Welch wrote in a post on X. He added that UNRWA is “the only organisation in the region with the ability to help Palestinians recover from devastation and live in dignity”.

“The humanitarian work of UNRWA helps keep one of the most volatile regions in the world stable,” Welch added in a separate post. “That’s why I’ve introduced a bill alongside my colleagues to restore funding to UNRWA so the organisation can resume its work combatting hunger and disease.”

The US has historically been UNRWA’s largest donor, but it paused funding for the agency in January 2024 – stripping it of some $360m in annual aid. More than 120 organisations signed a letter this week urging the US Congress to restore funding for the agency.

Gaza reconstruction plan ‘foundation’ towards liberation of Palestinian state: PM

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa has called for the adoption of the Palestinian-Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of Gaza at a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the news agency Wafa reports.

“We will work by all means to ensure the successful implementation of the reconstruction plan, not only as a foundation to restore life to our people in Gaza and all of Palestine but as a foundation to launch our efforts towards liberation from the grip of occupation and the realisation of our independent Palestinian state on our national soil,” Mustafa said at the meeting, held today at the headquarters of the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Mustafa called on the international community to escalate political, diplomatic, legal and economic pressure on Israel. He stressed that the unity of Islamic nations is an effective tool in confronting Israel and achieving peace and stability in the region.

Israel targets sites in southern Lebanon: Military

Israel’s military says that it has conducted strikes on “military sites” belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where it said “weapons and rocket launchers” were identified.

“A short while ago, the [Israeli army] conducted intelligence-based strikes on military sites in southern Lebanon belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in which weapons and rocket launchers belonging to Hezbollah were identified,” the army said in a statement on X, adding that they “constituted a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon”.

“The [army] will continue to act to remove any threat to the State of Israel and prevent any attempt to restore and consolidate the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” the statement continued.

Despite the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has continued to strike targets in Lebanon regularly, leading international bodies and countries such as France to allege ceasefire violations.

Palestinian father dies hours after being reunited with released son: Report

A Palestinian father died just hours after reuniting with his son who was released from Israeli detention as part of the ceasefire agreement, Palestinian news agency Wafa reports.

Ibrahim Sabbah died in Cairo hours after reuniting with his son Ayham, 24, who was released by Israel after nine years in custody and deported to Egypt. The family announced that Sabbah died of a sudden health crisis shortly after their emotional reunion, according to Wafa.

Sabbah had been living with his family in Beitunia, near Ramallah, when his then 14-year-old son was shot by Israeli forces and subsequently detained. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison before being released in January in a swap for Israeli captives.

Palestinian injured after Israeli military vehicle collision

A Palestinian man was injured after an Israeli military vehicle collided with his vehicle in Jenin, occupied West Bank, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

The PRCS said that its crews evacuated the 55-year-old man.

The man transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital, where medics confirmed that they were dealing with a man who sustained an injury after his car was forcefully hit by an Israeli army vehicle, Wafa reported.

For more than a month, Israeli forces have been raiding Palestinian homes and using bulldozers to destroy critical infrastructure. The assaults have largely focused on Jenin and Tulkarem.

The Israeli army said tanks have been deployed in Jenin for the first time in the West Bank since the end of the second Intifada, or uprising, in 2005.

Fuel and medical supplies scarce amid Israel’s aid blockade

    By Tareq Abu Azzoum

    Reporting from Khan Younis, Gaza

The situation is hanging by a thread. The Israelis’ ban on the entry of all sorts of aid into the Gaza Strip has done nothing but complicate both the humanitarian and medical situation.

We have seen throughout Gaza’s barely functional hospitals that medical teams are trying to do everything possible in order to continue to provide essential medical services. We’re talking about more than 100,000 wounded people who have injuries from Israel’s military attacks on Gaza, and now this ban has triggered huge concerns regarding two important issues: fuel and medical supplies.

Hospitals and medical centres are in desperate need of fuel in order to help medical teams continue to provide services. The vast majority of hospitals rely on emergency generators and now with the ban on fuel trucks entering the situation is getting much worse.

And it’s expected to get even worse within the coming days if there is not any serious intervention.
