UK’s Starmer, Saudi crown prince discuss US-Israel war on Iran

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has discussed the US-Israel war on Iran with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a Downing Street spokesperson said.

Starmer reiterated support for Saudi Arabia amid the ongoing attacks across the region and updated the Saudi crown prince on the deployment of further UK defensive military equipment, the spokesperson said.

“Iran’s ongoing attacks, including on critical national infrastructure, were appalling,” Starmer said.

“Following the UK-led joint statement last week, the UK was now working with partners on what a viable plan could look like to ensure the flow of goods through the key maritime route,” Downing Street said, quoting Starmer.

Governments need short and long term plans to reduce reliance on fossil fuels

Independent energy analyst Ketan Joshi has told Al Jazeera that the International  Energy Agency’s suggestions that people should be “working from home or rationing” fuel are likely “just the beginning.”

“If this crisis continues to get worse, these suggestions will move into enforced rules, and this will get very serious indeed,” Joshi said.

“The concern for many governments right now is short-term reductions in dependency on fossil fuels,” Joshi said, but in the longer term, he added, there should also be consideration of fuel types that aren’t as dependent on “long and complicated” global supply chains.

“Renewable energy and electric vehicles have come up a lot, but there are many other technologies as well that we can consider to reduce reliance in the short, medium and long term.”

Joshi added that “there needs to be much more condemnation of attacks against energy and power generation facilities,” as these are also “very much a threat to civilians, rather than just the infrastructure of fossil fuels.”

Israel ‘not part of negotiations’ between US and Iran: UN envoy

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, has said his country is not part of alleged talks between the US and Iran that are speculated to be held later this week.

Danon told UN reporters today that the US, along with Israel, was continuing to hit “military targets in Iran, and we will continue to do that”.

The strikes first launched by the two allies on Iran have “accomplished a lot”, he said, but not everything.

Danon added that Israel is bent on ensuring Iran has no capabilities for nuclear or ballistic missiles.

The envoy further accused Iranian authorities of saying, weeks earlier, that Iran did not have intermediate-range missiles – then allegedly firing a missile 4,000km (2,485 miles) towards the Diego Garcia island, which hosts an important US/UK army base.

Iran denied that it carried out the attack on the remote Indian Ocean location yesterday. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Sunday said the alliance could not confirm Israel’s claim that the projectiles used were Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles.

US-Israel war on Iran will see ‘end of sanctions regime’

Prominent US economist Steve Hanke, of Johns Hopkins University, says one of the unintended consequences of the US and Israel’s war on Iran is the benefits Russia is reaping.

Moscow is now supplying global markets with critical helium and fertiliser, which are no longer flowing freely from the Gulf, he said, among other products.

Another unintended but beneficial consequence to some countries, the economist added, will be the end of US sanctions on certain states, an approach the expert said is “ill-conceived”.

“The sanctions regime worldwide is going to disintegrate, [and] this will be the end of sanctions,” he told Al Jazeera.

The US eased sanctions on some Iranian oil on Friday. US President Donald Trump, a few weeks ago, eased sanctions on Russian oil in a temporary move meant to aid demand pressures.

Hezbollah says it attacked Israeli army in southern Lebanon, Golan Heights

Hezbollah has said it has targeted Israeli soldiers and infrastructure in southern Lebanon and the occupied Golan Heights.

In a series of statements, the group said it attacked Israeli troops gathering in three different areas of the southern Lebanese town of Taybeh with rockets and artillery shelling on Tuesday afternoon.

The group also said it targeted Israeli army infrastructure in the illegal Israeli settlement of Katzrin in the occupied Golan Heights with a rocket on Tuesday evening.

Lebanese officials have warned that the Israeli military appears to be planning a full-scale ground invasion south of the Litani River, an area US and Israeli officials have said they consider a part of the so-called “Greater Israel“.

At least 12 wounded in Israel after Iranian missile launch

Israeli emergency services say at least 12 people have been injured in the centre of the country this evening after a missile launch from Iran.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service said it provided first aid to nine people in the city of Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv, before taking them to local hospitals.

It said the wounded included a 23-year-old man in moderate condition with shrapnel injuries to the abdomen and head, and “eight in mild condition, including six children”.

Three people were also wounded in nearby Givat Shmuel, the MDA said.

The AFP news agency’s TV service ran footage from Bnei Brak showing heavy damage to buildings, including a balcony that collapsed onto a car. Images published by the MDA showed a building where a top-floor apartment had collapsed into the floor below.

The Israeli military has issued 12 alerts warning of incoming Iranian missiles this evening.
