Bint Jbeil ‘has become a version of Gaza’, says Lebanese PM

Nawaf Salam has said that the aim of his recent visit to Damascus was “to raise the level of cooperation between Lebanon and Syria”, noting that “significant progress has been made with the Syrian side, the results of which will soon become apparent”, according to the National News Agency (NNA).

“The Lebanese majority supports negotiations to end the war,” he is quoted as saying, referring to Israel’s attacks on the country, adding that Lebanon “demanded a clear agenda for Israeli withdrawal during the negotiations”.

“We did not choose war, but our country was dragged into the confrontation between Iran and America,” he said, noting that “68 Lebanese villages are now under Israeli control because of this war”.

Bint Jbeil, the town in southern Lebanon that Israeli forces have laid siege to, “has become a version of Gaza”, he said.

WATCH: Oil slick off Iran’s Kharg Island could become environmental disaster, professor warns

Satellite images released last week appeared to show a large oil slick spreading west of Iran’s Kharg Island, the country’s main oil export hub in the Gulf, covering dozens of square kilometers of sea.

However, Iran’s Oil Terminals Company has denied reports of an oil leak, according to state media. The cause of the possible spill and the point of origin remain unknown.

In an interview on Al Jazeera, Professor Chuk Okereke of the University of Bristol said any environmental incident at Kharg Island would “immediately cascade to an environmental and ecological and even geopolitical disaster.”

What’s happening in occupied West Bank?

As the world’s attention remains focused on the fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran, the Israeli army and settlers continue to carry out attacks across the occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

Here are some of the incidents reported by the Wafa news agency in the past few hours:

    • Israeli forces detained a Palestinian owner of property that the military has threatened with demolition and assaulted his brother in the raid.
    • Israeli forces raided the towns of Saida, Illar and Attil in the Sha’rawiya area north of Tulkarem.
    • Israeli forces stormed the town of Doha, west of Bethlehem.
    • Israeli forces deployed around the Balqis wedding hall, closed the main street in the area, and prevented traffic from passing.
    • The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society said that Israeli authorities have escalated their abuse of female Palestinian detainees held in Damon prison.
    • Israeli forces issued notices to confiscate land in the al-Jabariyat neighbourhood of Jenin city.

    Trump says Iran’s response ‘inappropriate’

    Analysis

Iran will ‘not be rushed’, as ceasefire talks face major hurdles

Simon Mabon, professor of Middle East studies and international politics at Lancaster University, says the latest diplomatic efforts, including the meeting between the Qatari prime minister and the US secretary of state, were “hugely important”.

“They want to send a message to the United States to say, ‘We are viewing this [peace deal] on our own terms. We’re not going to be rushed into this. We are not going to be held over a barrel. We aren’t going to be forced to make a decision that we are not necessarily happy with’,” he said.

“I think, also, part of that is that the Iranians think that they are in a much stronger position than the Americans think the Iranians are in.”

Mabon said both sides increasingly see themselves as the victors, making “diplomacy and direct talks incredibly difficult to achieve”.

The Lebanon front is another complicating factor, he added, with the so-called “ceasefire” breached every day since it was announced in late April.

“Netanyahu needs some type of political win from the past few months. He’s not got it with regard to Iran, so he’s trying with Hezbollah,” Mabon said.

Trump’s post is a rejection of most of Iran’s key demands

    By Rosiland Jordan

    Reporting from Washington, DC

This is the first reaction from the Trump administration since the Iranians said they had passed along their proposal for an end to the war.

What the US president said is basically that he doesn’t like the deal.

It’s not clear what it is that made Donald Trump put out such a brief and declarative statement.

But it’s fair to say that much of what the Iranians were putting forward – trying to end the US naval blockade, trying to deal with sanctions, trying to deal with any restrictions put on Iran’s nuclear ambitions – all of those things have been rejected by the US president.

Iran’s response emphasises guarantees from US, lifting of sanctions

    By Almigdad Alruhaid

    Reporting from Tehran, Iran

Iranian officials are not speaking clearly about what is in the proposal.

But we know what’s being circulated in local media – especially the semi-official Tasnim news agency – speaking clearly about what’s in the response. They’re citing highly informed sources.

The text emphasises Iran’s urgent need to end the war, and guarantees against further aggression toward Iran.

Additionally, Iran’s text emphasises the necessity of lifting US sanctions and Iranian management of the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on fulfilling certain commitments of the United States.

The release of Iran’s frozen assets during a 30-day period is also part of Iran’s text. Then they can jump to another sticking point after that 30 days – which is the nuclear issue.

But at this stage, Iran doesn’t offer to negotiate over its nuclear programme.

So Iran is saying simply that they’re open to negotiating – but let’s sequence the resolution.
