Hope grows in Iran that devastating war ‘might come to an end’

We have seen many Iranians fleeing Tehran and other cities during the 40-day war, and there was a lot of suffering in many parts of the country.

We have seen children killed and people losing their homes, their jobs and livelihoods.

Iran has been suffering economically, even before the beginning of this war, which made the economy much worse, and people are facing unemployment, a loss of opportunities across the board.

So, there must be relief tonight that this might come to an end, finally, after so many years of suffering.

Iranian authorities are framing this as a potential victory for Iran.

Iran was under sanctions, was under a lot of restrictions, its economy and politics and so on, before this war.

Its assets were frozen; it didn’t have leverage or any control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Now there is a likelihood, there is hope among the leaders here that that situation is going to be completely different after the signing of this agreement.

They are telling people that patience pays off, and that what happened and all the suffering that Iran has gone through during the last few months is worth the trouble, because Iran is going to emerge from this conflict in a much better condition.

Trump says ‘we ended the war with Iran today’

Trump has again spoken about negotiation with Iran during a tele-rally in support of Senate candidate Barry Moore, claiming that the war is now over.

“I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today, and they have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon, something that we, we insisted on,” Trump said.

Later in the call, Trump made similar comments, saying: “Today, we settled up with Iran”.

“We made a great deal. There’ll be no nuclear weapons. People will start coming home very soon. It’s pretty much, pretty much completed. We got everything we wanted.”

French, Lebanese foreign ministers discuss end to fighting in Lebanon

Lebanon’s foreign minister, Youssef Raggi, has met with his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, amid ongoing negotiations to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

According to a summary of the meeting, released by Raggi, Barrot described the Lebanese government’s position – which includes participating in mediated talks with Israel – as “courageous”.

Raggi “expressed the hope that these negotiations will lead to a ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal”.

He also emphasised that the “decision to reserve the right to bear arms to the State has been taken definitively and irrevocably”, Raggi wrote in a post on X.

Wall Street rallies as Trump cancels Iran attacks

Key US stock prices rose late on Thursday after Trump again said that a deal with Iran was close.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 1.75 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.54 percent.

“It’s another day when the war is about to end, according to the administration. That drove the market up,” said Rick Meckler, a partner at Cherry Lane Investments in New Jersey.

“Is it one more false lead, or is it really coming to an end?” Meckler asked.

“The biggest weight on the market remains the war and its impact on inflation, particularly energy. And if it was to end, it obviously is a real positive,” Meckler added.

Hezbollah claims 24 attacks on Israeli forces in south Lebanon

The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah announced it has launched a series of drone, missile and rocket attacks targeting Israeli military personnel, armoured vehicles and positions across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley region.

According to the statement detailing operations from Wednesday through Thursday, Hezbollah said it repeatedly targeted gatherings of Israeli soldiers and armoured vehicles, particularly focusing on the al-Rajman area in the vicinity of Tayr Harfa, which was struck four separate times.

Gatherings of Israeli troops and vehicles were also targeted in the Lebanese towns of Naqoura, al-Qaouzah, Rashaf, al-Qantara, Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Yohmor al-Shaqif, it said.

‘Positive understanding’ in Tehran on proposal, but final signing ‘subject to consideration’

There is a positive understanding here in Tehran about this memorandum of understanding.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, told the media this evening that, yes, there is a proposal; it is now under consideration by the supreme leader of Iran, and also the top leaders of the country, and that it might well end in a kind of signing.

But the news about a location and timing are probably speculations at this moment.

Also, there is no complete agreement by the Iranians on this yet, subject to consideration.

He also mentioned that this agreement is almost the same as the one that was agreed on in principle between the two sides with the Pakistani mediation before the recent strikes, and the Americans have chosen two things… to demand for more modifications on the agreement, out of greed. They went to those military strikes to frame the Iranian approval or potential approval today as something that has come under military pressure.

He is basically showing that the Iranians are, on the one hand, almost on the same page with the Americans, but also, not yet, not completely, not absolutely, because they are still studying the details, and at the same time, they are not fully trusting the American side.

They are still suspicious about whether the Americans, this time around, are serious about this peace deal proposal, or whether they will suddenly change their minds, as they used to do, and begin a new course of action against Iran, as they did several times during the last couple of months.
