‘It was important to stay calm’

India’s victorious captain Rohit Sharma has been speaking to the media after the match.

“I know with any score on this ground, you cannot relax. You’ve got to get the job done as quickly as possible and stay at it,” he said.

“We knew there would be pressure on us and some partnerships, but you have to stay collected.”

Sharma touched on the tension in the air in Mumbai, with New Zealand threatening a huge upset.

“Mitchell and Williamson batted brilliantly, and for us, it was important to stay calm,” he said.

“At one point the crowd went absolutely silent, but that is the nature of the game. We knew we had to pull something out”.

‘This was one chance we were not going to let go’

Seven-wicket hero Shami has been reflecting on his magnificent performance in Mumbai.

“I was waiting for my chance and tried to keep things simple,” he said. “There’s a lot of focus on variation, but I believe in the old adage of getting the ball up. I was a little disappointed that there was a catch dropped. But fortunately, the slower ball was working and I was very happy to get that wicket [of Williamson]”.

He also discussed how he was feeling when New Zealand were really starting to come into the game during that Williamson-Mitchell partnership.

“We have come very close in the past, but this one chance we were not going to let go. Who knows when the next chance might come?”

The end of the road for New Zealand

New Zealand made the final of this competition four years ago, but they can’t repeat that feat this time around.

They were always facing an uphill task chasing 398, but credit must go to Williamson and Mitchell, who made India sweat with a massive partnership.

In the end, Shami proved too much for the Black Caps batsmen, but they can head home with their heads held high.

Congratulations India. Good luck in the Final. Thank you to everyone who has supported the team during the@cricketworldcup near and far! Scorecard | https://t.co/Xc6jdcfX9H #CWC23 pic.twitter.com/cBOdq94bzF

    Shami’s magnificent seven

Shami was simply sensational in that innings.

He picked up two wickets in the first 10 overs and then grabbed some crucial wickets when New Zealand were looking very dangerous.

If Kohli was the star for India with the bat, Shami was undoubtedly the hero with the ball. He has the most wickets in this tournament so far, 23 and counting.

All over! India win by 70 runs

Ferguson is the last man in and he smashes Shami for six over deep mid-wicket. Shot!

He tries to go for another but edges behind and Shami has seven wickets! Incredible bowling.

India are into the World Cup final.

Wicket! Shami has six! New Zealand 321-9

Shami’s last over of the day and what a day it has been for him.

Not satisfied with his five wickets, he decides to add another.

Southee is out for nine, fishing at one on the off side. He edges behind and Rahul takes it with a diving catch.

Wicket! Santner caught by Sharma! New Zealand 319-8

Siraj is in again and will be keen to pick up a late wicket for his efforts today.

    And he gets one!

He delivers a slower ball bouncer to Santner who waits for the ball to reach him but can only catch it with the toe end of his bat.

It loops up in the air and is comfortably caught by Sharma. It’s almost over.

    47 overs. New Zealand 313-7

India have been tested today, they were certainly nervous when that partnership between Williamson and Mitchell was racking up the runs.

The hosts’ array of bowling talent has proved too much for the Black Caps though.

Bumrah is in for his 10th over of the innings. After a shaky start, he has bowled very well today.

He nearly has another wicket as Southee stretches to shank a wide delivery to cover. He finds Sharma who drops the catch after being blinded by the floodlights.

    Three overs to go.

    46 overs. New Zealand 308-7

Shami fully deserves his five-wicket haul today. He has bowled brilliantly from the off.

Southee is the next man in and picks up one run as New Zealand drift towards the exit at this World Cup.

Wicket! Mitchell caught by Jadeja! New Zealand 306-7

Shami has five wickets and Jadeja a hat-trick of catches!

After swinging and missing at the first ball of the over, the New Zealander connects with Shami’s second delivery, lofting the ball over mid-wicket.

But he’s caught in the deep by who else but Jadeja.

It brings to an end a remarkable innings from Mitchell, scoring 134 balls off 119 balls.

    45 overs. New Zealand 306-6

300 is up for New Zealand, but unless Mitchell can pull off a miracle you sense this game is almost up for the Black Caps.

A quick single puts Mitchell on strike against Bumrah but he’s unable to hit a four or a six and has to take a single to put Santner back in.

A few more singles see New Zealand move to 306-6. Just seven off the over, it’s not enough.

A brilliant over from Kuldeep at this stage of the game.

He kept things tight and secured another key wicket.

That’s his lot for this innings. 10 overs, 56 runs, one wicket.

Another New Zealander is caught by Jadeja on the rope!

This time it’s Chapman off the bowling of Kuldeep.

Just two runs off five balls for the Kiwi batsman.

Wicket! Jadeja catches Phillips on the rope! New Zealand 295-5

There’s a run out chance off the first ball of Bumrah’s eighth over, but the replay shows it was not out and New Zealand pick up two more.

Phillips reads a yorker well to open the face of his bat and edge the ball behind for a boundary behind third man.

He nicks the next ball behind, but it doesn’t carry and he lives to fight another day.

But his luck runs out! He tries to smash an effort over cover but finds Jadeja who safely takes the catch on the rope.

New Zealand are struggling to read his spin. Just two runs conceded, with New Zealand needing 110 from 48 balls.

    41 overs. New Zealand 286-4

Siraj continues his spell as we enter the final 10 overs in Mumbai.

Phillips hits him for a huge six off his third ball, picking up a wide yorker to smash the ball over point.

He backs it up with another six from a full toss, as the strain begins to show on the faces of some of the Indian fans in the crowd.

Siraj sends two of his balls wide, gifting New Zealand runs and more balls to attack. Phillips goes for one of them, smashing a boundary through the off side.

Twenty from the over for New Zealand. This isn’t over.
