    ‘It brings the nation together’

“This is what a World Cup does on home soil,” former Socceroos player John Aloisi said on the Australian broadcast.

“It brings the nation together. Everyone is behind them, believing they can go all the way.

“This penalty from Vine. It gives you the belief that they can go all the way.”

    What a match

There weren’t any goals in 120 minutes but the entertainment factor was high. The contrast in styles added to the contest and both teams had chances to seal the game in regulation time. It was even, it was eventful, it was engrossing.

Penalties were a separate story altogether, with Durand and Arnold pulling out stunning saves to keep the shootout going. Durand’s save off Hunt was probably the pick of the lot. It was a stunning performance from the Sassuolo keeper who came in towards the end of extra time.

And so at the end of it all, The Matildas progress to the semi-finals where they’ll play either England or Colombia.
