‘We couldn’t break down the defending’

Brazil coach Pia Sundhage summed up her thoughts on the team’s performance: “First of all, we needed to create more chances and use the width better. We also have to put away the chances as well.

“They played well and they fought well. We couldn’t break down the defending,” she said.

“We do have high expectations. We started off the World Cup pretty well. We just have to face the result.”

The referee blows the whistle as the Jamaican players rise to celebrate.

Brazil have crashed out of the 2023 World Cup.

The France-Panama match is still continuing as the scoreline has lessened to 5-3 in favour of the former, but there is still about 10 minutes to go in stoppage time.

    Brazil win corner

The Selecao fans are up on their feet as their side earns a corner from the right side.

The delivery is sent in with the ball bobbling for a few seconds before Debinha gets on the ball.

She tries to fire a shot past Spencer, but the keeper has been magnificent throughout as she rushes over to catch the chance.

    Brazil win dangerous free kick

The opportunity is from about 20 metres out just right of centre.

Debinha is responsible for taking it, and fires in a shot at the near post.

Spencer is able to move well to her left to stop the incoming threat.

Meanwhile, we will have four additional minutes of stoppage time.

    Brazil face daunting prospect

As we near stoppage time, Brazilian fans look absolutely disconsolate at the notion they may be soon out of this World Cup.

Jamaica have been terrific in keeping their attacking threat to a minimum, but there is still time for a last-gasp winner.

    Geyse goes wide

Soon after the Shaw effort, Geyse is afforded a chance at the near post on the left side.

However, she blasts the shot well wide to cause any trouble to Spencer.

    Shaw fires over bar

This is without doubt their best opportunity so far.

Shaw storms in towards the box despite being harried by defenders.

She powers a shot at net, but the resulting effort ends up going skywards.

If it had gone in, it would have effectively ended Brazil’s World Cup hopes.

The sellout Melbourne crowd stands to their feet as Marta is brought off by Sundhage.

She is joined by Antonia and Luana.

The replacements are Andressa Alves, Duda Sampaio and Geyse.

    Spencer saves Jamaica

The ball is sent in from the left side by Brazil along the ground to try and find a willing receiver.

Swaby gets down to block the effort, but ends up spooning over a chance towards the far post.

Spencer is keenly aware, however, as she leaps to intercept the ball before it caused any further threat.

Worrying signs for the Reggae Girlz as Shaw is once again lying on the pitch.

It looks like it’s her right hip, which is affected after battling Souza for the ball.

She heads to the touchline to receive some treatment as Jamaica temporarily soldier on with a woman down.
