  • Substitute Scott McTominay scored a late header to give Manchester United a 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park in Birmingham in the UK.
  • Rasmus Hojlund gave United a first-half lead against the run of play. Douglas Luiz equalised in the second half, but Villa failed to make the most of numerous chances and McTominay sealed the win for the visitors with a powerful header from a Diogo Dalot cross.
  • Villa remain fifth in the league with 46 points, while United are sixth with 41.
  • Aston Villa have now won only once in their last six games across all competitions, while United are unbeaten in six games.

    It’s a wrap

With this result, United shore up sixth place in the Premier League standings with 41 points.

Despite the loss, Villa are still in fifth with 46 points, but have crucially dropped six points in their last three fixtures.

We hope you enjoyed our coverage of today’s encounter, and do make sure to join us as we build up to the AFCON Cup final between Nigeria and hosts Ivory Coast.

    Full-time

The referee blows the whistle, and Erik ten Hag’s men pull off a great escape!

Despite being utterly dominated on the stats sheet, it is United who prevail at Villa Park to give their Premier League campaign a mighty boost.

The home side looked the better team in large swathes of the match, but it was the decisive finishing abilities of Hojlund and McTominay that ultimately made the difference.

    Garnacho fails to test Martinez

The Argentinian international does well to rush through the middle and get to the top of the box.

He fires a shot along the ground, aimed for the bottom-left corner, but Martinez sees it all the way.

The United forward really should have done better from that distance.

The ball finds Bailey on the right side of the box, and he sends in a pass towards the middle.

Luiz sticks his boot out to deflect the ball right into the top-right corner to set Villa Park alight.

After a United corner goes begging, the ball finds Bailey, who sets off for a run down the middle.

He snakes in and out before trying to lay off a pass for Ramsey just in front of him, but fails to get enough on it.

United are able to recover the ball soon after.
