Iraq vs Indonesia 2-1: AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 – as it happened

Iraq vs Indonesia in the third-place playoff has ended, but there is more to come from Al Jazeera’s coverage of this tournament.

On Friday, we will be back for the final between Japan and Uzbekistan, which will kick off at 6:30pm local time (15:30 GMT) in Doha, Qatar.

Indonesia will be disappointed to suffer defeat after taking the lead in the first half.

They fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to see them through.

They miss out on automatic Olympic qualification, but have a second chance to qualify for the Summer Games.

The Indonesians will face Guinea in an Olympic playoff match next week in Paris.

Iraq join Japan and Uzbekistan as the three teams who have gained automatic Olympic qualification for the Paris Games.

Iraq have done it!

They have come from behind to defeat Indonesia 2-1 in the third-place playoff!

Jenner scored the opener for Indonesia in the 19th minute, but Tahseen found the equaliser in the 27th minute with his header. In extra time, Jasim then scored a 96th-minute winner, sealing the team’s victory and an automatic Olympic qualification berth at the Paris 2024 Games.

The Iraq U23 team are heading for their third podium finish at the tournament, having won the title in 2013 and finishing third in 2016.

The Iraqis, under pressure, are doing well to throw their bodies to block any danger.

Ferdinan, from the right wing, whips in a cross inside the box for his striker up there, but before the ball can get to him, the Iraqi keeper comes out of his line and collects the shot.

Karrar and Halo have come on for Muntadher and goal scorer Jasim. Muntadher was taken off on a stretcher due to an injury.

Indonesia are awarded a corner kick and Tjoe-A-On takes it, sending it way too deep for any of Indonesia’s attackers to get on the end of it.

Thanks to Jasim’s 96th-minute strike, Iraq are leading 2-1 at the end of the first half of extra time.

If they do, they will secure an automatic Olympic qualification berth, but if Indonesia equalise, we will be heading to a penalty shootout.

Jasim goes for goal again, this time with a curling effort from a tight angle inside the box. His attempt, though, goes wide of the far post.

Hubner, the Indonesian captain, was at fault there for Jasim’s goal. He failed to mark the Iraqi winger inside the box while he made his way in and towards goal.

Jasim has put Iraq in the lead; 2-1 for the men in white!

Muntadher, from defence, finds Jasim up top with an excellent aerial ball and the Iraqi winger makes a run towards goal. He rushes in from the right side before unleashing a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner of the goal.

With that, Jasim also becomes the highest goal scorer of the tournament (four goals).
