  • Spain thrash Switzerland 4-1 in a chaotic League 1 Group D Nations League clash at the Stade de Geneve, despite going down to 10 men after defender Robin Le Normand was sent off early in the first half.
  • The Euro 2024 champions raced into a two-goal lead with early strikes from Joselu and Fabian Ruiz, but went a man down after 20 minutes when Le Normand was given a straight red for hauling down Breel Embolo as he ran through on goal.
  • Amid driving rain, Zeki Amdouni pulled a goal back for Switzerland just before half-time, and Spain rode their luck as the Swiss had two goals disallowed and hit the bar from a free kick.
  • As the Swiss searched for an equaliser late in the second half, Spain scored twice more in quick succession from counterattacks, with Ruiz grabbing his second goal and substitute Ferran Torres capping off the victory with another.
  • Denmark are top of the group with six points after beating Serbia 2-0 earlier in the day. Spain are second on four points, Serbia are third with one point and Switzerland are bottom with no points.

    Full time: Switzerland 1-4 Spain

A thrilling and chaotic contest in Geneva comes to an end, as 10-man Spain beat Switzerland 4-1 for their first win of this year’s tournament.

The reigning Nations League and Euro champions got off to a solid start at a wet Stade de Geneve with a fourth-minute goal from Joselu.

Switzerland thought they had equalised through Omeragic in the sixth minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Then, in the 13th minute, Ruiz doubled Spain’s lead as the visitors caused all sorts of problems for the hosts.

However, in the 20th minute, Spain were reduced to 10 players after Le Normand was sent off for a silly challenge on Swiss attacker Embolo.

Switzerland made good use of the numerical advantage and pulled one back through Amdouni in the 41st minute, but couldn’t add more goals in the second half, as Spain kept the hosts’ attackers at bay.

Two sweeping counterattacks saw Ruiz complete his brace in the 77th minute before substitute Torres scored the fourth goal in the 80th, as the Spaniards walked off with three points in Group A4.
