    More from Germany coach Wuck

“We can be proud of how we played, and we created euphoria in the stadiums,” Wuck added.

“I hoped many people would turn up, but I never expected so many people to turn up to support the players. The players became great celebrities in a way, and we are happy we could pay back the fans for the effort they made.”

Germany coach Wuck shares disappointment after semifinal exit

“We are very disappointed,” German coach Wuck said, according to UEFA’s website.

“Congratulations to Spain; they proved again today what quality players they have in their team.

“For the neutral, it was good to see how they passed the ball and the individual qualities they have – well done to them and good luck in the final.”

Asked about goalkeeper Berger taking responsibility for conceding Bonmati’s strike, he added: “She didn’t have to do that; she made so many wonderful saves that got us to where we are. There is no blame; we are very proud of the team.”

‘England are dangerous,’ says Spain’s Caldentey ahead of final

“I’m tired,” the Arsenal attacker told the BBC.

“We knew it would be a hard game against the Germans, but now we are in the final and are so excited! I know a lot of England’s footballers. It will be a hard game; they are dangerous even if they haven’t played their best football yet.

“It [the title] is something we have never won, and we really want it. We have been focused from game one.

“With this team, you feel like everything is possible. We have a strong team and have a lot of ambition. We respect England, but we will go for it.”

    The pundit’s view

Former England captain Steph Houghton, who made more than 100 appearances for the Lionesses, spoke to the BBC broadcast after the match.

“It was unbelievable. For me, I think at the end of that second half, Bonmati started to take control of the game, and Spain weren’t at their very best, but she was at the heart of everything that they did. It’s a great weighted pass, though [from Del Castillo].

“I honestly thought [that] from Spain’s point of view, she [Bonmati] was definitely their best player, and she’s got them through to their first-ever European Championship final.”

Recap: Bonmati’s extra-time heroics guide Spain to maiden Euro final

Spain’s Aitana Bonmati struck a superb extra-time winner to fire her side to a 1-0 victory over Germany on Wednesday and send them through to the Women’s European Championship final for the first time, where they will face reigning champions England.

Spain captain Irene Paredes struck the foot of a post with a first-half header as her side dominated possession, with the Germans building a solid block and inviting the Spaniards to attack while they attempted to strike on the counter.

Klara Buhl had several decent chances in the second half, including a deflected stoppage-time effort that Spain keeper Cata Coll had to claw away, but the game ended scoreless, forcing extra time.

Bonmati finally broke the deadlock in the 113th minute, picking up a ball in the right channel and spotting a gap at Ann-Katrin Berger’s near post, before whipping a shot from a tight angle into the net to send her side through to Sunday’s final in Basel.

Bonmati delivers for Spain in tightly-contested semifinal

Days before the tournament, Bonmati found herself in a difficult situation. The Barcelona midfielder and 2024 Women’s Ballon d’Or winner faced a health scare, viral meningitis forcing her into hospital and disrupting her preparations.

“When I left the hospital, I had been lying down for four or five days, unable to move, and I completely stopped all physical activity,” the 27-year-old explained.

Today, she scored the winning goal in extra time, guiding her team to their first-ever Women’s Euro final.

    What a comeback!
