White House: No decision on evacuating US diplomats
No decision has been made to evacuate US diplomatic personnel from Sudan but the United States is preparing for such an eventuality if it becomes necessary, the White House has said.
John Kirby, the White House national security spokesperson, said all US citizens in Sudan must “make their own arrangements to stay safe” as violence rocks the country.
He said President Joe Biden had approved a plan earlier this week to move US forces nearby in case they are needed to help evacuate US diplomats.
“We are simply pre-positioning some additional capabilities nearby in case that they’re needed. But I want to stress again … there’s been no decision to move forward with any kind of an evacuation at this time,” Kirby told reporters.

Battles ‘raging’ in Khartoum: AJ correspondent
Al Jazeera’s Haitham Uweit in Khartoum says battles are raging in many parts of the capital, specifically those east of the Blue Nile.
The area has a major road called the Qawmy (National) Road, which connects Khartoum to the states of Gezira, Al Qadarif, Kassala and the city of Port Sudan, Uweit noted.
“The road is a supply line for the army, which explains why confrontations have intensified in this area,” he said.
“There is also talk about battles raging in al-Bagair, which lies on the western side of the Blue Nile. Al-Bagair hosts most of the factories in Khartoum.”

- Sudan’s army declares a three-day truce during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, hours after its adversary, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), said it would observe a 72-hour ceasefire. Witnesses said fighting continued in the capital, Khartoum, after the army announcement.
- The World Health Organization says at least 413 people have been killed and more than 3,500 injured since fighting broke out last week between the army and the RSF.
- Fighting between the two parties erupted on Saturday, derailing an internationally backed plan for a transition to a civilian democracy after the fall of Omar al-Bashir during mass protests in 2019.
