Equivalent of a classroom of children killed in Gaza every day: Save the Children
The equivalent of a classroom of children is being killed every single day in Gaza, Save the Children says, amid “absolutely horrific” attacks on Palestinians desperately seeking aid.
Commenting on Israel’s strike on al-Mawasi, which killed at least seven children waiting in line at a water distribution point, Save the Children’s head of Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Alexandra Saieh told Al Jazeera that such attacks were “now practically routine”.
“Israel not only blocks lifesaving assistance through the physical obstruction at border crossings in Gaza, but [it is also conducting] attacks on children and civilians waiting for items that are lifesaving for them,” Saieh said.
“We have seen now for two years that Gaza is a place where children have been systematically attacked, where the numbers of children being killed every day are enormously high,” she added.
“We are seeing war crimes and atrocities being committed in Gaza and children are bearing the brunt of that.”

Nasser hospital calls for release of detained Gaza doctor
Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis has demanded the immediate release of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, head of paediatrics at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who was detained by Israeli forces earlier this year.
In a post on Facebook, the hospital said: “Freedom for Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and all health workers. Israel continues to unlawfully detain hundreds of Palestinian health workers.”
The statement cited testimonies of detainees describing “ongoing torture, repeated beatings, night raids, and humiliation by guards”, as well as the denial of medical care, lack of food and hygiene items, and the absence of formal charges or fair trial rights.
Abu Safia was taken by Israeli forces in December during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya.
At the time, the World Health Organization said he had been leading efforts to treat children during weeks of heavy bombardment in northern Gaza. His arrest drew widespread condemnation from international medical organisations.
The Nasser Hospital said the detention of Abu Safia and other health workers prevents them from treating “tens of thousands of wounded and displaced in Gaza” and called for urgent international action.

Palestinian foreign minister welcomes Belgium’s statehood recognition
Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin has welcomed Belgium’s decision to recognise Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly, calling it a “principled stance rooted in international law”.
“We welcome Belgium’s decision to recognize Palestine at the UNGA; a principled stance rooted in international law & vital for preserving the two-state solution. We urge all states to follow suit and act to end Israel’s crimes and occupation,” Shahin wrote on X.
Her comments followed the announcement by Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, who said, “Palestine will be recognized by Belgium during the UN session! And firm sanctions are being imposed on the Israeli government.”
Prevot said the move comes in response to “the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza,” and described it as necessary to increase pressure on both Israel’s government and Hamas.
“This is not about sanctioning the Israeli people but about ensuring that their government respects international and humanitarian law and taking action to try to change the situation on the ground,” he said.

Protesters urge Ireland to match words with action on Palestine
Campaigners are urging the Irish government to take stronger action after its central bank said it will no longer approve the sale of Israeli “war bonds”.
It comes after Israel shifted the EU approval process for its diaspora bonds from Dublin to Luxembourg on Monday, after sustained opposition from Irish lawmakers and campaigners.
But protesters told Al Jazeera that Ireland “must do more” and still remains “complicit” in Israel’s actions, pointing to US military planes transiting through Shannon Airport, and the long-stalled Occupied Territories Bill, intended to ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements, stuck in legislative “limbo”.
Outside a protest at the Irish embassy in London on Monday, Irish activist Nell Crow said the “Irish government shouldn’t think they are now off the hook”.
“We need to pressure the Irish government over their complicity in genocide by demanding they enact the Occupied Territories Bill, remove the US military from Shannon Airport, and impose full cultural and economic sanctions on goods and services from Israel”, she said.
“The Irish government is full of empty words of support for Palestine, but their actions, or lack of meaningful action, contradict those words. We need to continue the pressure,” Crow added.

Israel’s Defence Ministry announces launch of advanced surveillance satellite
The Israeli Defence Ministry has announced the successful launch into space of “Ofek 19”, an observation satellite with advanced capabilities that include providing high-resolution imaging for intelligence and surveillance purposes.
The satellite was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Israeli military. The ministry said that once in orbit, the satellite would undergo a series of tests to ensure it is functioning.
It substitutes for the “Ofek 13,” which was sent into orbit in March 2023.

Israeli foreign minister says Macron ‘disconnected from reality’ after Palestine comments
Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, has criticised the French president after he reiterated support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, calling his actions “dangerous”.
As we reported earlier, Macron wrote on X that “no offensive, annexation attempt, or forced displacement of populations will derail the momentum” towards a two-state solution.
Responding on X, Gideon Saar said, “Macron is trying to intervene from the outside in a conflict to which he is not a party, in a manner completely disconnected from the reality on the ground after October 7th.”
“Macron undermines the stability of the region with his actions and drags the regional and international system toward unilateral steps. His actions are dangerous. They will not bring peace nor security,” he added.
Tensions have risen after France announced it would recognise Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York, a move that prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accuse Macron of fuelling anti-Semitism.

Al-Shifa Hospital at 2.5 times its capacity, director says
The director of al-Shifa Medical Complex, Muhammed Abu Salmiya, tells Al Jazeera that bed occupancy has exceeded 250 percent as Gaza hospitals are overwhelmed with the wounded and sick.
Abu Salmiya said all medicine stocks were below 60 percent, with some totally depleted.
Meanwhile, the hospital recorded the significant spread of respiratory and skin diseases, especially in displacement camps.
Abu Salmiya also said famine deaths had been the highest in August, and he expected the number to increase going forward, as Israel presses its seizure of Gaza City.

Israeli military claims senior Hamas member killed in Gaza City
Israeli forces says it has killed Hazem Awni Naeem, a Hamas member it accused of holding three Israeli captives in Gaza.
“The senior terrorist Hazem Awni Naeem, who held Emily Damari, Romi Gonen and Naama Levy in captivity, was eliminated in the Gaza City area,” the army said in a statement on X.
According to the military, Naeem served in Hamas’s Gaza City brigade and later became a senior operative in its military intelligence unit. It said he was “close with the commander of the Gaza City brigade, Ezz al-Din Haddad.”
There has been no comment yet from Hamas on this claim.

Israeli settlers take over Palestinian house in Hebron Old City
Israeli settlers have occupied a Palestinian-owned house in the Old City of Hebron, the Wafa news agency has reported, under the protection of the Israeli army.
The army sealed off several streets as the settlers stormed the house, belongs to the Naser family, according to the Palestinian news agency.
This follows reports that Israeli forces arrested the mayor of Hebron, Tayseer Abu Sneineh, set up checkpoints around the Hebron governorate and closed a number of roads.
After Abu Sneineh’s arrest, Hamas warned that Israel’s actions reflect “plans to annex the occupied West Bank lands”.

Caveats on Palestinian statehood make Belgium’s move ‘hollow’
Muhammad Shehada, a visiting fellow with the European Council on Foreign Relations, says Belgium’s move to recognise Palestinian statehood was “long overdue”, but that caveats “hollow it out of any meaning or consequence”.
Belgian officials said recognition would only be formalised once the last captive has been released from Gaza and Hamas no longer plays a role in Palestinian politics.
Shehada told Al Jazeera that in its current formulation, Belgium’s decision risked giving Netanyahu’s government yet another incentive to reject a ceasefire and a prisoner swap.
Additionally, Shehada said the move should be considered as a stepping stone to the question of advancing Palestinian statehood, which requires imposing sanctions, isolating Israel and marginalising hardliners within its government.

Macron says Israeli ‘annexation’ cannot halt Palestinian state recognition
French President Emmanuel Macron has said Israel’s attempts to annex more of the occupied West Bank will not derail international momentum towards the recognition of a Palestinian state.
“No offensive, annexation attempt, or forced displacement of populations will derail the momentum” towards a two-state solution, Macron wrote on X after a call with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
France is among several countries preparing to formally recognise Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. Belgium on Monday became the latest Western nation to announce it would do the same.
Macron also criticised Washington’s decision to deny visas to Palestinian Authority officials seeking to attend the meeting. He described the move as “unacceptable”, echoing criticism from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“We call for this measure to be reversed and for Palestinian representation to be ensured in accordance with the Host Country Agreement,” Macron said.

UN says aid missions blocked and tens of thousands displaced in Gaza
The United Nations has said Israeli restrictions are continuing to obstruct humanitarian access in Gaza, with thousands more people forced to flee their homes amid worsening conditions.
“OCHA reports, the movement of humanitarian teams inside Gaza remains heavily restricted,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters in New York.
“Between Friday and Monday, about one in three planned missions were either impeded or outright denied by Israeli authorities. That’s 12 out of 37 movements that we coordinate with them. As a result, many missions couldn’t be completed.”
Dujarric said the restrictions also affect supplies before they enter Gaza. “Our colleagues leading on logistics say that strict physical inspections by Israeli authorities continue … to significantly delay aid clearance at Ashdod port,” he said.
According to the UN, displacement continues across Gaza. Since August 14, more than 76,000 new displacements have been recorded, including 23,000 movements from northern to southern Gaza.

Amnesty condemns arrests of pro-Palestinian campaigners
Amnesty International has condemned the arrest of five spokespeople for Defend Our Juries (DOJ) – a group which has been campaigning for the British government to revoke its terror ban on Palestine Action – whose homes were raided under section 12 of the UK’s Terrorism Act.
Kerry Moscogiuri, Amnesty’s director of campaigns and communications, called the arrests “a terrifying example of the UK authorities’ willingness to use authoritarian practices to silence dissent”.
“The mass peaceful demonstrations they have organised over recent weeks are protected by international human rights law – and to think they run the risk of being imprisoned for up to 14 years is incredibly concerning,” Moscogiuri said in a statement.
Earlier this year, Palestine Action were designated a terror group by the UK government after protesters allegedly sprayed an RAF plane with red paint to protest Britain’s complicity in Israel’s war on Gaza.
Moscogiuri added that “expressing support for Palestine Action does not meet the threshold” for criminalisation under international standards and described the arrests as a violation of the UK’s human rights obligations.

Dutch prime minister presses Netanyahu for Gaza ceasefire
Dick Schoof said he urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza during a phone call, warning that Israel’s intensification of the war was worsening an “already-catastrophic situation”.
“In a phone conversation with Israeli prime minister Netanyahu today I strongly pressed for an immediate ceasefire and a drastic improvement to the desperate humanitarian situation in Gaza,” Schoof wrote on X. “Israel must comply with the humanitarian agreement with the EU.”
He also called on Hamas to release all remaining captives, lay down arms and “play no role whatsoever in the future of Gaza”.
Schoof said the Netherlands condemns “any step that undermines the two-state solution,” citing Israel’s illegal E1 settlement plan in the occupied West Bank.
“A war without end is in no one’s interest,” he said. “The violence and suffering have to stop. The Netherlands will continue working, together with our partners, to that end.”
