Caught between alliances, US in ‘uncomfortable position’ amid Aleppo clashes
The clashes in Aleppo put the administration of US President Donald Trump in an uncomfortable position.
Obviously, the US has long backed the SDF. They brought 900 soldiers into Syria [to support the SDF against ISIL].
But at the same time, the US is trying to prop up the new Syrian government, so they want to see the violence in Aleppo end.
They’re offering to help bring talks about. Whether this will be effective, we’ll have to wait and see.

US used A-10 thunderbolts, F-15 aircraft in strikes on ISIL targets in Syria
We don’t know a whole lot [about the US’s latest strikes on ISIL targets in Syria].
US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a video in which you can see they are land-based attacks using A-10 thunderbolts, which is a low-flying aircraft that can drop munitions, but also has a 30mm cannon that can fire lots of rounds. F-15 Eagle aircraft were also used in the attacks. CENTCOM said they were widespread.
The previous round of US strikes on ISIL targets in Syria on December 19 involved over 100 munitions and 70 sites.

US military announces new attacks on ISIL targets in Syria
The US military says it has carried out “large-scale” strikes on ISIL positions throughout Syria.
In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces, alongside “partner forces”, began carrying out the wave of strikes at 17:30 GMT. It did not mention casualties.
CENTCOM said the operation – the second of its kind since December 19 – is a “direct response” to an attack by an ISIL gunman earlier in December that killed two US soldiers and an interpreter.

Syrian Energy Ministry accuses SDF of cutting water supply to Aleppo’s eastern countryside
Water supply from the Babiri pumping station in the eastern Aleppo countryside was halted today at 5:30 pm local time (14:30 GMT) “due to a direct order from military elements affiliated with the SDF, Syria’s Energy Ministry claims.
The group quickly denied the information as false, saying it comes “within the context of a systematic disinformation campaign that reveals its use as a tool for incitement”.
“The operation and water pumping at the Babiri station are subject to management and technologies that fall outside the scope of our forces’ operations, and the Damascus government itself has previously targeted the station with artillery shelling on multiple occasions, then sought to hold others responsible for the consequences of its actions,” the SDF said in a statement on X.

Will regional actors intervene in SDF-government clashes?
Steven Heydemann, professor of Middle East studies at Smith College, says regional actors may intervene more directly in Syria if conflict between the central government and the SDF spills beyond Aleppo into the SDF’s heartland in the northeast of the country.
Turkiye, he said, is increasingly aware that negotiations between the SDF and Syria’s government may fail and is willing “to support the central government if it pursues a military option”.
Israel, for its part, is evaluating how the spread of conflict may affect its presence in southern Syria, he added.
“I think if Turkiye were to intervene directly in north-eastern Syria, the Israelis would escalate their own positions in the south and we could be facing a very dangerous condition,” Heydemann added.

If negotiations fail with SDF, Syria’s government will pursue integration by ‘other means’
Steven Heydemann, professor of Middle East studies at Smith College in the US state of Massachusetts, has said Syria’s government appears to be weighing whether to ditch negotiations with the SDF and use “other means” to integrate the Kurdish-led force into state institutions.
The SDF’s presence in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods “has been a source of friction between the central government and the SDF leadership in eastern and northeastern Syria since the fall of the al-Assad regime”, Heydemann told Al Jazeera.
“Aleppo is Syria’s largest city, the linchpin of northwestern Syria’s commercial, political and industrial life, so to have enclaves in Aleppo outside the control of the central government was always going to be very difficult for the government to swallow.”
Heydemann said that since negotiations between the government and SDF leadership over how to implement a March 2025 agreement on integrating SDF forces into state institutions failed to make progress, the government is “recalculating” its options.
“It has decided that negotiations, if they are not productive, need to be set aside to pursue integration by other means,” said Heydemann.

‘Relative quiet in Aleppo’, but ‘sporadic’ fighting continues
Compared with what we have seen over the last three days, it is quiet in Aleppo. However, sporadic fighting is still going on.
The government says that its forces are now at the centre of Sheikh Maqsoud and that the majority of SDF fighters have laid down their arms. It says those fighters have been taken on buses to be transported to the city of Tabqa in Raqqa province, where the SDF is in control.
However, the government says there are still some SDF factions that are fighting back and refusing to lay down their arms and surrender.
While that is happening, the government claims it is continuing to carry out security sweeps. That’s why it is urging civilians not to return to their homes yet.
The government says once the area is clear of explosives, mines and other suspicious items, it will publicly invite civilians to return home.
