India vs Pakistan: Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 cricket match – as it happened

After several rain-enforced delays and hours of waiting, that was the end of Pakistan vs India in the Super Fours of this year’s Asia Cup.

India are due to play co-hosts Sri Lanka tomorrow at the same venue, while Pakistan will face Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Fingers crossed that rain does not play spoil sport again!

India win by 228 runs! A resounding victory for the men in blue. They bundled out Pakistan within 32 overs.

After the first meeting between India and Pakistan was washed out, India will be happy to celebrate a win today.

The match started on Sunday afternoon in Colombo, with Rohit (55) and Gill (58) giving a solid start before rain interrupted the match and play was called off.

The game resumed today evening after further delay, as Kohli (122 not out) and Rahul (111 not out) smashed centuries in the first innings, setting Pakistan a target of 357.

Pakistan’s chase began poorly with opener Imam (9) and captain Babar (10) dismissed cheaply and then their middle order also suffered a collapse. Eventually, Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul ended any hopes of a Pakistan comeback as they were all out for 128.

Today’s result was India’s highest margin of win [by runs] against Pakistan.

Kuldeep completes his five-wicket haul, dismissing Faheem for four runs.

And that’s the end of Pakistan’s chase, with Naseem and Rauf both injured and unavailable to bat.

India will likely need only two more wickets to win this match as Pakistan’s Rauf was injured and will likely not come on to bat.

Meanwhile, India go back to some pace bowling as Shardul comes on. He limits the batters to just two runs.

Bumrah has gone off the field. We don’t know the reason for that yet.

Pace bowler Afridi comes on to bat at no 9.

Kuldeep, who took a great catch earlier, ends the over having conceded only four runs.

Soon after hitting Kuldeep for a four, Iftikhar is dismissed for 23. Kuldeep dived to his right to collect the return catch, bagging his fourth wicket of this match. Can he do a five-wicket haul?

Jadeja bowls the 29th over as Pakistan score just four runs from it.

Pakistan’s current run rate is 3.96. They require 11.52 runs per over for a win.

Pakistan’s collapse continues as Shadab is dismissed for six runs. Shadab tried to clear long-on with his shot but could not find the elevation on it, sending it straight to Shardul at long-on.

Faheem is the next player in the tail end of their line-up.

Another one falls for Pakistan. Shadab is caught at long-on by Shardul. Kuldeep picks up his third wicket!

Jadeja bowls another over, this time going for four runs.

Pakistan’s batting has been underwhelming and painfully slow. They have struggled to form a partnership, unlike India who had solid partnerships with Gill-Rohit and Rahul-Kohli during their innings.

With the fall of Pakistan’s fifth wicket India flags are out waving again, while some Pakistan fans are making their way out of the stadium. Pakistan are swiftly moving towards the tail of their batting line up with a long way to go to their target.

Spinner Kuldeep bowls the 26th over, restricting Pakistan to just three runs.

Pakistan’s current run rate is 4.00, while their required run rate is 10.54.

Jadeja comes back with the ball and concedes only four runs from it.

Looking at Pakistan’s fall of wickets, it looks unlikely that they would be able to play full 50 overs. Their tailenders have now made the way, with Shadab on the field now along with Iftikhar.

Salman hits him for a four, going over mid-on.

The medical staff treats Salman and he resumes playing, wearing a helmet this time. It looked like he had a bruise under his right eye and underwent a concussion test.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep bowls the 22nd over and concedes only one run.

If the match were to end now, or after 21 overs, Pakistan would lose by a huge margin. Their DL par score has to be 189 at the end of 21 overs, with four wickets down.

It’s all doom and gloom for Pakistan fans at the moment as their batting line-up crumbles in front of familiar foes.

More spin for India as Jadeja comes on and restricts Pakistan to four runs in this over.

Salman, playing without a helmet, injures his face and is seen bleeding. He tried to go for a sweep shot but ended up top-edging the ball into his face.

The Pakistan medical staff is currently treating him.

Fakhar went for an expansive slog, but completely missed the shot, as the ball crashed into middle stump.
