This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as China beat Indonesia 2-1 in their World Cup 2026 qualifier on Tuesday, October 15:

  • China beat Indonesia 2-1 to win their first game in Group C of the third round of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • In a must-win game for the hosts at the Qingdao Youth Football Stadium, China went into half time 2-0 up thanks to strikes from Behram Abduweli in the 21st minute and Yuning Zhang just before the break.
  • Indonesia dominated possession for large stretches but lacked a cutting edge, although Thom Haye scored late to give the visitors hope of a comeback.
  • The referee gave nine minutes of added time, but China held firm to secure a vital victory after they had lost their previous three group games.
  • China remain bottom of the group on goal difference, but are now equal on points with fifth-place Indonesia. Bahrain are in fourth place on four points with a game in hand as they play Saudi Arabia in Jeddah later today.
  • The top two teams in the group will automatically qualify for the World Cup while the third- and fourth-placed finishers from the three groups will head into a final qualification round.

    How does Group C look?

China finally open their account and sit at the bottom of the group with three points from four games.

Indonesia also have three points, but sit above China in fifth place due to a better goal difference.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, who are due to play later on Tuesday, occupy the fourth and third spots respectively.

Australia are second with five points following their 1-1 draw earlier on Tuesday with Japan, who lead the standings with 10 points.

    Full-time: China 2-1 Indonesia

China have done it! They hold on for a resilient 2-1 win over Indonesia – their first win in this phase of the World Cup qualifying.

The referee’s full-time whistle could barely be heard due to the cheers from the Chinese fans at Qingdao Youth Football Stadium.

China needed to pick up points in this game, and they walk away with three, thanks to first-half goals from Abduweli and Zhang.

Indonesia thought they could come back into the game after Haye scored late in the game, but they couldn’t find the net again despite dominating possession for large parts of the match. This is their first defeat in this round.
