  • Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the latest El Clasico in the final of the Spanish Super Cup at King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
  • Kylian Mbappe gave Real the lead before Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Alejandro Balde turned the match in stunning style before the break.
  • Barcelona, who thumped Real 4-0 in October in LaLiga in the last meeting between the sides, extended their lead early in the second half with a second goal from Raphina, but had goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off soon after. Rodrygo converted the resulting freekick but it was only a consolation for Madrid.

  • Barca, who finished second in the league last season, overcame Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in their last-four clash.

    It’s a wrap

Sports City is treated to an attacking football exhibition as Barcelona come away with the 2025 Spanish Super Cup.

Real will now shift their focus on the remainder of their season, especially on a day where they not only lost to their biggest rivals but also lost pole position in LaLiga to their cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona will hope to use this result to propel their challenge for the top spot in the league. We hope you enjoyed our coverage of today’s encounter. On behalf of Kevin Hand, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.

‘Goal of the big clubs is to win titles’

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick spoke with Barca One after the match: “I am very happy to have won our first title with Barca [Barcelona]. We have worked very well. Today, I can only congratulate the team. We defended and attacked together.

“I feel very proud of the players, the club and the fans. It was a great game. We responded well to Real Madrid’s first goal and then continued to play very well.

“When Szczesny was sent off, it wasn’t easy. What I’m most proud of is the way we defended. I’m very happy with many things, but especially with this one.

“The way we played is important. Today we made mistakes and that’s what we have to reduce. When you have the ball, everything is easier.”

“The goal of the big clubs is to win titles, and that is why we work hard. Now we must show, in every game, how good we are. It’s not easy to play with 10 men against Real Madrid. We have two great goalkeepers.”

    ‘We always want more’

Speaking with Barca One after the match, Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowksi examined the match: “In our heads, we always want more. Today we are very happy, but in three days, we have another match.

“Until December, we played very well, and during Christmas, we were analysing all the bad things we did that month.

“It is very important to be mentally strong. It does not matter who we play against. It does not matter where we play – we always want to win.

“We can celebrate today but tomorrow, we have to start preparing for the next Copa del Rey match. We don’t have much time.”

    Barcelona on a roll

When they scored their third goal, it was their seventh in two games against Real Madrid this season.

It’s noteworthy when you consider that it matched how many they had scored in their previous six matches combined before that.

‘We defended badly and that cost us the game’

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti dissected his side’s performance with Movistar: “We defended badly and that cost us the game. They found their goals quite easily.

“We’re sad, like all our fans. It’s disappointing and we don’t have to hide that. We have to look forward – there’s nothing else we can do.

“He [Kylian Mbappe] was the best [Madrid player].” Ancelotti offered at the end.

Real were up first for the runners-up medals

It wasn’t the walk that Carlo Ancelotti or his players wanted to make but the looks on all of their faces were more a reflection of the manner of the defeat, rather than the loss of the Supercopa itself.

It’s back-to-back El Clasico thumpings for Los Blancos now.

‘If we applied the plan, we would win’

Barcelona right-back Jules Kounde spoke with Movistar after the match: “It’s really nice. It had been a season since we [last] won a trophy. It’s always special, and on top of that, in a Clasico against Real Madrid.

“We had a lot of calm and patience, knowing that if we applied the plan, we would win. I’m very proud and happy with the team.

“Right after the red card [of Wojciech Szczesny], we got together and said we were going to have to suffer [and] sit back. But we had a big advantage [of a three-goal lead] and this can’t escape us.”
