  • Title hopefuls Arsenal entertain Newcastle United in a crunch clash towards the end of the English Premier League season.
  • The match at Emirates Stadium, London, in the United Kingdom, kicks off at 5:30pm (16:30 GMT).
  • Arsenal’s near four-month stay at the top of the table was ended by Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Burnley on Wednesday.
  • Newcastle, who were early-season title contenders two years ago, are 14th in the table and have lost their last three games.
  • A point for the Gunners will be enough to see them return to the top of the table, as they are currently second only on goals scored from City with five games to play.

    Early Arsenal team news

Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber are Arsenal’s main injury concerns for the visit by Newcastle. The former has an Achilles problem and has not featured since the League Cup final defeat by City a month ago.

Timber has a groin problem and is close to a return, but, like Saka, it is felt this game will come too soon.

Riccardo Calafiori could return to the side, however, having missed the last three games with a knock. Mikel Merino is still a long-term injury with a fractured foot.

How bad is Lamine Yamal’s injury? Will he make Spain’s World Cup opener?

Barcelona announced on Thursday that Lamine Yamal’s domestic season in Spain is over, but that the international forward should be fit to represent his country at this year’s World Cup.

The 18-year-old striker helped Spain to the Euro 2024 title, while also lifting La Liga with Barca last season.

Yamal sustained the injury while scoring the only goal of Wednesday’s game against Celta Vigo from the penalty spot.

Al Jazeera Sport has taken a closer look at how Yamal’s injury grabbed global headlines after their football game on Wednesday, and what the road to World Cup 2026 may now look like for the Catalan.

News from Spain: Prestianni banned after slur aimed at Vinicius Junior

Benfica’s ‌Gianluca Prestianni has been handed a six-match suspension for discriminatory conduct that was deemed homophobic in a Champions League match against Real Madrid, UEFA announced.

Prestianni will be banned for two more matches after UEFA said on Friday that a further three-match suspension would be “subject to a probationary period of two years, starting from the date of the present decision”. He has already served a one-match provisional suspension.

The Argentinian winger was accused of directing a racist slur at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during the Spanish side’s 1-0 Champions League playoff first-leg win ‌in February.

The first leg was suspended for 11 minutes shortly after Vinicius gave Real the lead early in the second half.

Television footage showed Prestianni covering his mouth with his shirt repeatedly before making comments that Vinicius and nearby teammates interpreted as a racial slur against the 25-year-old.

Prestianni had denied the accusation that he had made a racist comment, saying Vinicius had misheard him. Real’s Aurelien Tchouameni said the Argentinian told him he did not call Vinicius a “monkey” but directed a homophobic comment at him.

UEFA also said it would request FIFA to extend the suspension worldwide.

How do Arsenal and Man City shape up for Premier League glory?

Manchester City’s 1-0 win at Burnley on Wednesday night left them tied with Arsenal on both points (70) and goal difference (+37). City tops the table only courtesy of more goals scored (66 to Arsenal’s 63).

Pep Guardiola’s side were nine points adrift of the Gunners after drawing with West Ham on March 14. Three straight wins, combined with back-to-back losses for Arsenal, have seen the title race turn on its head.

    Welcome to our live coverage

Hello, welcome and thanks for joining our live coverage of Arsenal against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

After a near four-month stay at the top of the pile, the Gunners have lost pole position to Manchester City, with only five games to play.

With City’s attention turned to the FA Cup, however, a point will be enough to see Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reclaim top spot.

Newcastle themselves suffered what is undoubtedly the greatest Premier League choke nearly 20 years ago, but their arrival in London for the match was in no sort of form at all. Will they upset the odds, though, and add to their hosts’ woes?

I’m Kevin Hand, and I’ll bring you the live build-up and photo coverage of the day, plus the news, analysis and opinion surrounding the game.

Rohan Sharma will bring you the team news as it lands and our comprehensive text commentary stream of the match.
